France is the largest country in the European Union and home to over sixty million people. The capital city – and a popular vacation destination – is Paris, in Northern France. Southern France is home of the Cote D’Azur, or the azure coast, where the sparkling blue water and year-round sunshine draw many visitors. Other areas are known for growing different varieties of grapes to make popular wines and champagne.
France was ruled by kings for much of its history – the most popular of which was Louis XVI. The Sun King, as he was known, built the famous palace of Versailles.
