I’m a big proponent of packing using only a carry-on.  For the first couple of trips I took to Europe, I checked my bags.  When we rented a car it wasn’t a problem, but in 2009, we traveled mostly by train.  I often needed help getting the suitcase up the stairs to the platform – either from a family member or a stranger. It was embarrassing and I vowed never to pack that heavy again.
